Kristy’s Style Tips: How to Spot High-Quality Thrifted Finds
Thrifting is one of my favourite ways to bring personality into a home, but knowing how to spot high-quality pieces is the key to finding true gems. Whether you're hunting for furniture, decor, or artwork, here are my top tips for thrifting like a pro.
First, pay attention to materials. Solid wood furniture, natural stone, and genuine leather last far longer than particle board or plastic. Flip over tables and chairs—sturdy joinery like dovetail joints signals craftsmanship. For upholstered pieces, look for down-filled cushions or well-built frames.
Thoughtfully curated textures and materials bring warmth and character to the space.
Want to know if something is real crystal? Give it a flick! If it produces a clear, ringing sound, it’s crystal. A dull sound means it’s glass.
Another trick - check for brand markings. Many high-end furniture and decor brands label their pieces. A quick search on your phone can tell you if you’ve found a hidden treasure.
A perfect example of blending old and new for a collected look!
Solid wood furniture with strong joinery is a must-have find when thrifting for timeless pieces.
When it comes to decor, I always keep an eye out for baskets, pottery, crystal, marble, and brass. Handmade pottery has a texture and weight that mass-produced pieces lack, and a beautifully glazed or textured vase can elevate any space. Marble trays, bookends, and side tables are timeless and often a fraction of retail prices. And brass candle holders, bowls, and hardware? They add warmth and elegance - especially vintage pieces with a naturally aged patina.
These pieces add texture and warmth, creating a collected-over-time aesthetic in any home.
Finally, don’t shy away from a little wear and tear! A well-loved patina adds charm, and minor scuffs can often be refreshed. With patience and a keen eye, thrifting can bring unique, high-quality character to your home - without the designer price tag.
