Kristy’s Style Tips: Lighting 101 - Setting the Mood in Your Home
Lighting is one of the most impactful elements in home design.
The right lighting creates warmth and ambiance, while poor lighting can make even the most beautifully styled room feel flat or hospital-like.
Here’s how to use lighting to set the perfect mood in your home…
A unique touch—an unexpected lamp placed on a kitchen counter adds warmth and ambiance, making the space feel inviting beyond just task lighting.
You can never have too many lamps! Lamps create a soft, diffused light that makes any space feel instantly cozier. I have a lamp in my front entry and on my kitchen counter - unexpected spots that add warmth and charm. Lamps in the kitchen are often overlooked, but they’re a great way to introduce soft, low-level lighting. Whether it’s a table lamp, floor lamp, or a small accent lamp, these details make all the difference.
Finally, dimmers are a must-have. Being able to adjust brightness lets you create the right mood at any time of day. Thoughtful lighting choices bring warmth, character, and comfort to your home effortlessly.
Layered lighting brings depth and coziness to the space.
Layer, layer, layer! A well-lit space isn’t just about one overhead fixture - it’s about balance. Combine ambient lighting (overhead or recessed lights), task lighting (lamps or under-cabinet lights for specific activities), and accent lighting (wall sconces or picture lights to highlight architectural features). This mix adds depth and flexibility to a space and achieves the ambiance you’re looking for.
Next, choose the right bulbs. For the coziest, most inviting glow, 2700K warm white is ideal—especially in living rooms and bedrooms. Anything cooler can feel harsh in spaces meant for relaxing.
Dimmers allow flexibility to create different moods throughout the day.
