Building Homes and Hope: AVDB Volunteers with Habitat for Humanity

On September 26, 2024, the AVDB team spent a day volunteering with Habitat for Humanity at their largest development project yet, located on Pandora Ave. We had the amazing opportunity to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and contribute to their largest project to date—a development that will house 55 future Habitat families on Pandora Ave West in Transcona. Together, we worked on sheathing the basement of a future home, and though the day was challenging, it was one of the most rewarding experiences we’ve had as a team.

Why We Love This Project

Habitat for Humanity’s Pandora project is nothing short of inspiring. Set on three acres of land, this development will provide homes for 275 people, including 175 children. Each home is designed to be energy efficient with a carbon-free zero footprint, making it an environmentally sustainable haven for families in need. It’s amazing to think that by the time the project is completed in November 2026, 55 deserving families will have a place to call home, right here in our community.

Habitat for Humanity’s mission is one that resonates with us, not just because of the work they do but because of the impact they have. Affordable housing changes lives, providing stability and security for families who need it most. We’ve seen firsthand the difference a safe home can make, and that’s why we’re proud to support this organization, both through volunteer efforts and spreading the word about their work.

The build day was more than just a team activity for us; it was a way to contribute to something lasting in our community. We look forward to seeing these homes completed and welcoming families who deserve a place to call their own.

Our Day on the Build Site

The day started early, with our team putting on hard hats and getting briefed on the tasks ahead. Our main job involved sheathing a basement, a crucial step that requires precision and teamwork. It was physically demanding work, but knowing that our efforts would directly contribute to building safe and stable housing for families made it worthwhile.

For many of us, it wasn’t just about putting up walls—it was about understanding what those walls represent: a secure place for families to grow, a chance for children to thrive, and a fresh start for those in need.

Looking Ahead

As the project moves forward, there will be many more opportunities to volunteer, donate, or simply spread the word about the work Habitat for Humanity is doing. Whether it’s getting involved with future build days or supporting fundraising efforts, there’s always a way to help.

The Pandora project represents more than just a housing development—it’s a commitment to building a stronger, more inclusive community. We’re grateful to have been a part of it, and we’re excited to see it come to life.
