Getting Your Home Baby-Ready: A Realtor’s Perspective (and a Mama-to-Be’s!)

Hi everyone, Erika here! Guess what?

I’m adding “mom” to my title soon and as I prepare for this exciting new chapter, I’ve realized that getting your house ready for a baby is a whole journey of its own. Whether you’re expecting, planning for the future, or just curious, I’m sharing some practical steps I’ve been tackling (and some I’m still working on!).

Let’s dive in!

A functional nursery with a crib, rocking chair, and neatly organized baby clothes.

1. Tackle Those Nagging Projects

You know that “I’ll get to it someday” list? Well, now’s the time to turn it into the “I’ll get to it before the baby arrives” list!

Think:

  • Fixing the leaky tap or squeaky hinges

  • Painting touch-ups and the nursery!

  • Decluttering the closets and basement to make space for tiny outfits and baby gear.

  • Less is best!

Trust me, you’ll thank yourself later when those midnight feedings roll around and you’re not tripping over that pile of stuff you meant to organize.

2. Babyproofing Basics (Start Early!)

Okay, full disclosure: your newborn isn’t going to start crawling on day one, but why not get ahead of the game?

  • Install safety latches on cabinets with cleaning supplies.

  • Anchor heavy furniture to the wall.

  • Baby gates!

Doing these things now will give you peace of mind and save you time once life gets busy—because spoiler alert: life with a baby is busy!

Prep and freeze meals ahead of time to make the early days with a baby easier.

3. Meal Prep Like a Pro

I’ve been told the last thing you’ll want to do during those first few weeks is cook (unless you’re a culinary genius who thrives on 2 hours of sleep, in which case, teach me your ways!).

Take some time now to:

  • Prep and freeze meals.

  • Stock up on pantry staples.

  • Convince your super excited parents and in-laws to contribute as well! It’s a fun and easy thing they can do to make your life so much easier!

Future you will be so grateful.

4. Deep Clean and Declutter

Babies are small, but they come with a lot of stuff. Creating space now will make the transition smoother.

Start with:

  • Wiping down baseboards, windows, and other spots you rarely get to.

  • Getting carpets cleaned (hello, tummy time!).

  • Donating items you no longer need—think of it as making

    room for new memories!

And hey, if you’re in Winnipeg and need help finding a great local cleaning service, I’ve got a few recommendations.

Cabinet locks and anchored furniture help create a safe environment.

5. Set Up the Nursery (or Baby Corner!)

You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect nursery to welcome your baby, but having a dedicated space—whether it’s a full room or a cozy corner—makes things easier.

Pro tips:

  • Assemble furniture now (you don’t want to be wrestling with a crib at 38 weeks).

  • Wash and organize baby clothes— I did not know this was a thing but it on my list now!

  • Create a diaper-changing station that’s easy to access, or have diaper caddies fully stocked throughout the house so you’re ready for anything!

A comfortable chair with a blanket and baby essentials within arm’s reach ensures smooth nighttime routines.

6. Practice a "Baby Day" Routine

This one might sound silly, but hear me out. Take a day to walk through your house like a sleep-deprived parent:

  • Can you safely navigate the house in low light?

  • Is there a cozy chair for those late-night feeds?

  • Do you have everything you’ll need within arm’s reach in key areas?

It’s all about making life a little easier for future you.

Getting your house baby-ready doesn’t mean striving for perfection—it’s about creating a space that works for your growing family. And hey, if you’re feeling overwhelmed, take it one step at a time!

If you’ve got any tips or tricks, let me know—I’m all ears! I can’t wait to welcome my little kiddo in a few months and will take any and all advice!

Hope this helps & Cheers to this new adventure!
